Mankweng: Life in prison for man (28) who raped three-year-old niece

The man from Mankweng raped the toddler while she was left in his care.

LIMPOPO -A 28-year-old man was on Thursday, 10 December sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mankweng Regional Court for rape.

According to Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the man who cannot be named to protect the identify of the victim, raped his three-year-old niece in January 2018, while she was in his care.

“On the day the victim’s mother had left her daughter with the accused. When she returned home she noticed that her child was in pain and immediately took her to the hospital for medical examination where it was confimred that she had been raped. The victim then informed her mother that the man who had raped her was her uncle,” Ngoepe explained.

The accused was immediately arrested and the case was assigned to Det Sgt Mape Jonas Sepaela, who is attached to the Polokwane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

“The accused appeared before the court several times and was granted bail throughout the proceedings, until he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday.”

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba welcomed the sentence and commended the Polokwane FCS Unit especially the investigating officer, for the commitment in fighting gender-based violence and in ensuring the perpetrator was permanently removed from society.
