Four people die in head on collision outside Lephalale

Three of the four deceased died when the vehicle they were in caught fire.

LIMPOPO – The Police in Lephalale are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a fatal head-on collision on the R518 near near Visgat on Sunday at around 17:00. The collision involved a bakkie and a sedan. Four people died and two people sustained serious injuries.

In a statement, Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says the sedan caught fire after the impact. “Three people were trapped inside the sedan, another passenger was found outside the vehicle. All four were certified dead on the scene.

Media Liaison Officer for the Department of Transport, Mike Maringa added that two occupants from the bakkie sustained injuries and were taken to the Lephalale hospital for medical treatment.

“Preliminary investigations revealed reckless driving as a possible cause of the accident.”

The exact cause of this accident is still not clear and will form part of a police investigation. The process of identifying the deceased is still underway.

“The latest collision brings to eight the number of people who were killed on provincial roads this past weekend.”

Among the deceased is a pedestrian who was knocked over and killed near Makonde in Vhembe.

“The reckless behavior of some motorists is concerning and the MEC of Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has urged motorists to drive with caution as we approach the festive season.”
