[UPDATE] Three confirmed dead following head-on collision on N1 north bypass

Three others were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

POLOKWANE – The Transport Department’s Media Liaison Officer, Mike Maringa, confirmed that three people were killed and three others seriously injured following the head-on collision this morning.

He said investigations revealed that two vehicles, a bakkie and minibus taxi, were involved in the collision and both caught fire. Three people, two from the taxi and the third from the bakkie were declared dead on the scene.

According to Russel Meiring, Communications Officer at ER24 three other people sustained injuries and were tended to on the scene. “Assessments showed that two patients were in a critical condition, while the third was in a serious condition. Medics treated the patients and provided the critically injured with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to nearby hospitals for further care.”

The Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, has sent messages of condolences to the families of the victims. The road is now open.

POLOKWANE РThe N1 north bypass road between Mall of the North and the Landdros Mar̩ offramp will be temporarily closed following a collision at around 05:00 this morning.

According to Mike Maringa, Media Liaison Officer for the Department of Transport, Both vehicle caught fire after they collided and an unconfirmed number of people were trapped inside.

“Preliminary information is that three people died and a further three were injured,” Maringa told Review.  

The road will be closed up to 2 hours. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible.
