Strong winds, flash flood damages Limpopo school

Maila Primary School in Ha Munzhedzi was dealt a severe blow when a storm blew the roofs off some of the classes a fortnight ago.

LIMPOPO – The school’s SGB secretary, Muvhango Tshotheli said he was at home when a flash flood hit the area. “I received a call that the roofing of some classrooms had been blown away.

“I rushed there, only to find corrugated iron scattered all over the school. There was water in the classes and, fortunately enough, our books were spared. We are just happy that it happened after school and that no learners were present,” he said.

Some furniture and books were damaged by rain, but what was spared are being stored in the staff room. According to Tshotheli electrical cables were left exposed. The school has been conducting their lessons under risky conditions since then.

This school was left roofless in a recent storm in Ha Munzhedzi.

A teacher at the school, who requested to remain anonymous, said their work was being affected. “As we are preparing for examinations, accommodating the pupils will be a very serious problem at the school,” he said.

Education Spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene said they are aware of the situation. “Our infrastructure team is processing a subsequent request for two additional mobile classrooms for the school. The date of delivery is yet to be determined.”

Chuene said that the school is on the list of schools due for provision of major infrastructure through EIG funding. The project is still at pre-feasibility phase for construction of 10 classrooms, Gr R facilities, a nutrition centre, a small admin block, paved parking bays and relocation of available mobile classrooms.
