Weekly police joint operations net a total of 1 687 suspects in Limpopo

Among those arrested is a 38-year-old man who was found in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition on farm in the Hoedspruit area.

LIMPOPO – The weekly police operations which were concluded in the early hours of this morning, have once again yielded significant results and according to a police statement have made a ‘significant impact in the fight against crime’.

“The simultaneous joint operations were conducted in all five districts and saw the arrest of 1 687 suspects for various offences including armed robbery, rape, murder, attempted murder, assault, burglary, stock theft, arson, malicious damage to property (MITP), dealing in drugs, possession of endangered species, and possession of drugs,” reads a statement which was issued by Police Spokesperson, Col Moathse Ngoepe.

Among the arrested, includes 38-year-old suspect for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the Hoedspruit area. “The police received a tip-off from members of the community on 26 October regarding the suspect having an unlicensed firearm in one of the farms in the area. The police arrived at the said farm and a search of the premises was conducted. During the search the police managed to recover an unlicensed rifle with ammunition and the suspect was arrested. The accused has since appeared in the local court on a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The court outcome is not yet known.

These operations were conducted through roadblocks, stop and searches, raiding of illegal businesses including liquor outlets and tracing of wanted suspects.

“Other successes include the recovery of nine firearms, eight vehicles, 31 dangerous weapons, 25 knives, various drugs, liquor and other suspects stolen goods. A total of 1 398 fines were issued for the road traffic offences, 35 shebeens were closed, 13 824 vehicles searched and 27 075 people searched.”

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba praised all these members involved in the operations for their immeasurable commitment in eliminating crime across the province. The arrested suspects, aged between 20 and 56, have already started appearing before the various magistrate courts across the province.
