Police, assisted by community nab armed robbers at Modimolle resort

The suspects were arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a retail store in Bela Bela CBD on Friday. They had attempted to flee the police by abandoning their vehicle at a resort in Modimolle.

LIMPOPO – Two arrested, arrested in connection with a business robbery at a retail store in Bela Bela, are expected to appear in the Bela Bela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 November. The face charges of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen properties.

In a statement, Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe said the duo, aged 21 and 23, were arrested at a local resort along the Eerbewoon road during a sting joint operation comprised of various police units, supported by the local community.

This follows an armed robbery at a local retail store, where four armed men entered the store and robbed them of bags of cellphones before they fled in a getaway vehicle. “The police were notified and a vehicle matching the description of the getaway vehicle was spotted soon after. The members gave chase and when the suspects noticed that the police were on their heels, they drove into the nearest resort, abandoned the vehicle and the occupants ran towards different directions on foot leaving the driver behind. Two men, including the driver were immediately arrested with the support from community members at the resort,” Ngoepe explained.

During the arrest, the police confiscated recovered three bags containing cell phones, believed to be some of the goods robbed from the retail store as mentioned above. The recovered goods are estimated to the value of around R400 000.

Ngoepe added that a manhunt is still underway for the remaining suspects.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba commended the teams involved in the arrest. He also thanked the residents at the resort for joining hands with the police, to win the fight against crime as part of the undying spirit of partnership policing.
