Magna Via double murder: five accused remain in custody

The husband of one of the businesswomen who were murdered over two weeks ago, is among five people who appeared in court today.

POLOKWANE – The case against the five accused in the double murder of Makoena Leshabane (46) and Tebogo Mphution (35), was postponed for profiling in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 October.

According to a statement issued by Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, Regional Spokesperson for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) the accused, aged between 25 and 57, face two counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The men were apprehended on Friday, 23 October in Ekhuruleni, Elseburg, Katlegong and Germiston areas, respectively. The husband of one of the businesswomen who was murdered, is among the five arrested. According to earlier reports the man was hospitalised after he reportedly attempted to take his own life and was arrested while still in hospital.

“The matter has been postponed to Monday, 2 November to profile the accused. The accused will remain in custody.”

Outside the court, members of the Women Taking Back Safety (WTBS) movement, as well as friends and family of the deceased protested, calling for justice.

The suspects face two counts of murder as well as the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

Makoena Leshabane (46) and Tebogo Mphution (35) on shot and killed ‘in execution style’ on 10 October in Magna Via. Preliminary police investigations at the time revealed that the two women were with a local property agent, viewing various business premises with the view of renting, when the shooting occurred.
