Dendron farm attack: Suspects denied bail

They appeared in the Morebeng court and were denied bail pending further police investigations.

LIMPOPO – The three suspects in the farm attack in August at Dendron (Mogwadi) appeared in the Morebeng Magistrate’s court and were denied bail on Friday, 23 October.

The attack happened on a farm in Bylsteel at around 01:00 on 5 August. During the incident a 58-year-old woman was raped and shot in the leg. Her husband (62) was severely assaulted and a 96-year-old woman who was also in the house was left unharmed. Firearms, a vehicle and several household goods were stolen.

Three suspects were arrested in Polokwane hours after the attack. One sustained gunshot wounds during the arrest and succumbed to his injuries in hospital a day later.

The two accused, aged 29 and 38, first appeared in court on 7 August and were remanded in custody until 14 August. A third suspect, who is said to be the mastermind behind the attack, was arrested a few days later. The 18-year-old man made his first court appearance with his two co-accused on 14 August.

In an earlier statement, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, Regional Spokesperson for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said that during the proceedings, the court heard that the third suspect’s mother was an employee of the victims. “The accused invited his accomplices from Gauteng and they went to the farm where they approached the house on foot. The dogs started barking but were calmed down by the accused, while his three co-accused proceeded to the house. The accused left the property with three firearms and other items in the vehicle which belongs to the husband,” she added.

The trio face charges of conspiracy to commit robbery with aggravating circumstances, housebreaking with intent to commit aggravated robbery, robbery with aggravating circumstances, two counts of rape, five counts of attempted murder, six counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm and six counts of unlawful possession of ammunition.

They are expected to re-appear in the same court on 15 December.
