Two young boys drown in river near Seshego

A third child was rescued and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition

POLOKWANE –  Two young boys drowned in a river in Bloodriver, Seshego on Wednesday afternoon, after reportedly experiencing difficulties while swimming. A third boy, who was rescued

was hospitalised, according to Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

According to reports the deceased and two other boys left their homes that afternoon, without the knowledge of the elders, to go swimming in the nearby river. “It is alleged that one of the boys reportedly withdrew when the other three jumped into the water. Shortly afterwards, he realised that they were drowning and ran home to get help. The community rushed to the site and managed to rescue one of the swimmers. The other two had already disappeared under the water,” Mojapelo explained.

The police were summoned and drivers from the Search and Rescue unit retrieved the two bodies from the river. The child who was rescued was in a critical condition and was rushed to the hospital.

The deceased have since been identified as Siyabonga Maepa (12) and Thabiso Maepa (9).

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has cautioned people to desist from entering flooding dams and rivers, especially during the rainy season. He also advised communities, especially parents and guardians to look after their children at all times.
