Waterval: Woman (42) gang-raped and left to die in bushes

The woman was discovered by a passer-by and preliminary investigation suggest she was assaulted with a blunt object.

LIMPOPO – The alleged gang-rape and attack of a 42-year-old woman in Waterval has left the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, shocked.

The woman is believed to have left her in-laws’ house on Saturday evening, 26 September, to return to her house in Mpheni, according to the department’s Media Liaison Officer, Mike Maringa.

Maringa said the woman was then attacked and left to die in the bushes.

“She was discovered on Sunday by a passer-by. The victim is currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman could have been assaulted with a blunt object on her face and the head,” Maringa said in a statement. He added that a case of attempted murder has been opened by the Waterval police.

Lerule-Ramakhanya says she is worried about the continued scourge meted against vulnerable groups in society and has called on communities to assist police with information that can lead to the arrest of the people responsible for the “heinous crime”.

Review has contacted Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo for comment and an update will be provided once received.
