Limpopo roads: 13 deaths in four days

A total of 13 people died in separate incidents which happened in various parts of the province over the Heritage long weekend.  

LIMPOPO – In a statement released, Media Liaison Officer for the Department of Transport, Mike Maringa says in the past four days 13 people died; among these was six people who were killed in three separate head-on collisions in the Capricorn and Waterberg districts, respectively.

In the first major accident four men were killed after two trucks collided head-on along the R521 near Mogwadi (Dendron) on Thursday evening. “The trucks burst into flames after the collision. Both drivers and two passengers died.”

A further two people died and eight were left injured in separate incidents along the R567 and R510 road, respectively.

The department has cited reckless and negligent driving as the possible cause in all these crashes.

Maringa adds that MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya has expressed her concern about the ever increasing number of pedestrian accidents on the provincial roads over weekends.

“Five pedestrians were killed over the long weekend, they were either knocked down by speeding vehicles while crossing at designated areas or by drivers who lose control of their vehicles and veer off the roads.”

She added that the department will reinforce and increase visibility to ensure motorist compliance with the road rules. “There will be zero tolerance to motorists who continue to violate and disobey traffic rules.
