What a finale to the 2019/20 season it turned out to be and congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns for successfully defending the title. Three times on the trot, but here is my assessment of season highlights, starting with the champions:

Sundowns – When money bags, Patrice Motsepe took over the club in 2003, he promised to conquer the domestic league and Africa and that has come true on both fronts. ‘Downs finished the season with same number of points as in the 2018/19 season on 59 to cap a 50th birthday celebration in style. Kaizer Chiefs fans are livid, and understandably so, but for a team that finished outside the top eight last season, they made remarkable progress. The fans, however, feel because they were top of the log for the better part of the season, they deserved to win it. Even lions know that being king of the jungle is not a permanent position. Year on year, Orlando Pirates fared badly. Last season they ended as runners up on 57 points and now, third, having amassed five points less than the 2018/19 season. Maritzburg United survived a drop through the skin of their teeth after going through the play-offs last season and now finished a decent seventh. Excellent work from the lads and Eric Tinkler. Baroka FC’s, Khurishi Mphahlele has lived another day to tell his tale. Same position and same number of points as last season. He needs to crack the whip a bit harder. Black Leopards finished 13th last season and now have to go to play-offs to save themselves from further blushes, while Polokwane City were the biggest flops of the season having finished fifth last season. Limpopo will be poorer without them.
