Limpopo police catch illegal immigrants, illicit cigarette smuggler

The arrests were made during joint operations in Modimolle.

LIMPOPO – The joint operations conducted in the Waterberg area yesterday, has led to the arrest of 12 people for various crimes.

The operations involved members of various SAPS units, traffic officials, the community policing forum, Home Affairs officials as well as members of Transnet. The operations were run in Modimolle zone 1 and 2 and focused on the tracing of wanted suspects, stop and searches as well as road blocks.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said in a statement that scrapyards and second hand goods premises were also paid a visit.

Mojapelo said one person was arrested for the possession of illicit cigarettes, while three people were arrested for the possession of dagga and another eight were arrested for contravention of the Immigration Act.

He added that 31 Road Traffic Act fines, 11 Bussines Act fines and 11 Warrants of Arrests were also issued.

The statement added that 13 spaza shop, six pawn brokers, four farms and two jewellery shops were paid a visit during the operation.

“The arrested suspects will soon appear before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, applauded the police for their continuous fight against all criminal activities within the province,” the statement concluded.
