Grandson arrested for gogo’s murder

The man had earlier accused the deceased of bewitching him.

LIMPOPO – A 19-year-old man is expected to appear in court today (Monday, 13 July) for the murder of his grandmother over the weekend.

The body of the 74-year-old Sayina Florah Baloyi was found in a RDP house in the central business district (CBD) of Hlanganani village outside Elim on Friday, 10 July.

In a statement, Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo explained that the granddaughter had found the body of the deceased grandmother. The police were notified and after investigations a manhunt was launched for the 19-year-old man, the grandson of the deceased.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the deceased had been strangled. It has since surfaced that the suspect had earlier accused her of bewitching him, said Mojapelo.

He was arrested on Saturday morning and will appear in the Tiyani District Court on a charge of murder.

The MEC for Social Development, Nkakareng Rakgoale reacted with shock to yet another murder of an older person in the province and called on the courts to not grant bail to the abusers and killers of women and children. “The 19-year old has taken away the right to life of his grandmother therefor he must just be denied bail, tried, found guilty and be sentenced to a lengthy jail term. We can’t afford to see older persons senselessly killed in this manner,” said Rakgoale in a statement on Sunday.
