Polokwane traffic weighbridge reopening date pushed back

The closure follows after an official at the centre tested positive for Covid-19.

POLOKWANE – The Department of Transport and Community Safety released a statement to say the Polokwane traffic weighbridge will not open on Friday, 26 June as initially planned.

The department’s media liaison officer, Mike Maringa, said the weighbridge will remain closed until Monday, 29 June.

“Decontamination of the offices will be completed on Friday and staff is expected back on Monday,” Maringa said.

Maringa advised trucks and other heavy duty vehicles drivers to stop at other traffic control stations when they use the N1 and R101.

24 June:

POLOKWANE – The Department of Transport and Community Safety have issued a statement after an officer at the Polokwane traffic weighbridge tested positive for Covid-19, late on Tuesday afternoon.

The department’s media liaison officer, Mike Maringa, said in the statement that the weighbridge is closed for decontamination and will open after two days.

“A complement of shift staff from the Department of Transport, Sanral and Load Control will resume with operations on Friday, 26 June,” Maringa said.

He said the affected official is currently in self-isolation and that all necessary precautions are being followed. Maringa told Review that officials work rotational shifts and that the entire shift is in isolation and will go for testing and screening on Friday.

“The tests were done at a private laboratory on Sunday and the official was on leave from 12 to 21 June. He came back to work on Tuesday to submit his leave application and sick note and spent about 30 minutes in the office. His results were confirmed a day after,” Maringa said.

Maringa added that the official was on sick leave when he decided to test for Covid-19. The official did not have specific symptoms according to Maringa.

Truck drivers were reminded to not stop at the weighbridge until Friday. The other weighbridges in the province remain open.
