Lockdown, and my choice of career

Gr 12s relate how the lockdown has affected their choice of career.

POLOKWANE – Gr. 12 is the year where most learners make their final career choice.  During the national lockdown, many people and learners were made aware that some careers are deemed more essential than others, depending on the circumstances. One might think that this would have had an effect on Gr 12’s career choices but for a few learners, their choices have remained the same.

Suné van der Hoff – My career choice has remained the same, I wanted to become a hairdresser and I still want to be one. I had always been uncertain, but my choice was final after working in a salon. I started working there just to have a job, but that was the deciding factor. To be creative and to work with people is my passion. I learn more skills by being in the salon. I miss being in the environment and I cannot wait to start working again. The biggest motivation in making my decision was that I can always create work for myself.

Jané van der Hoff – My choice of career has not been affected by the lockdown, I wanted to study to be a chef and it is still my choice. I want to be a chef as it is my passion. Being on my feet for hours at a time, as well as late nights and early mornings will not bother me because it is something I want to do. I’ve worked for more than a year at a well-known restaurant with an excellent chef, as well as at a wedding venue where I experienced the pressure of the profession. It was there that I realised I want to be nothing but a chef.

Melanie White: I wanted to become an accountant before the lockdown and I still want to. All the people who have lost their jobs have made me realise that you have to choose a career that will always be in demand. It also taught me to always have a plan B.
