‘How lockdown affected my job’

We spoke to locals across various sectors to hear how the lockdown has thus far affected their circumstances.

POLOKWANE – With the national lockdown, even in on level four, various businesses have been severely affected as their operations came to a halt. We spoke to residents across various sectors to hear their experience.

Tony Marageni, the founder of the Madombidzha Rugby Club and Louis Trichardt Touch Rugby, says since no sport is allowed during this time, the club has for the time being shifted their focus to administrative duties.

“Some clubs have been affected quite negatively. For obvious reasons, there are no practise sessions, and we are all a bit uncertain about how the rest of the season will go.” He said it was a pity that the progress made by especially the younger players, before lockdown, will now have to be rebuilt.

Vaniah Thomas, a local photographer also weighs in on how his business was affected.

Tebellelo Phashe, is a waitress at a local liquor outlet, and since the lockdown she has been without a job. Here’s what she has to say:

Local spa owner Mulalo Mbulaheni says the lockdown surely doesn’t favour her as a young businesswoman. She only recently opened her business and says the current situation will be felt in her industry even after the lockdown. “Customers will no longer be able to afford my services due to the financial implications of the lockdown. A spa is one of the most hygienic places out there, but we are still not allowed to operate.”
