[WATCH] Move for your health this Sunday

Sunday is World Move for Health Day and Review asked a personal trainer for some exercises our readers can do. We also share some information about an online workout the whole family can join on Sunday.

POLOKWANE – World Move for Health Day is celebrated on Sunday, 10 May and this year, you can join in online.

According to the World Health Organization, 38,2% of South Africans are inactive. The organisation recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, such as brisk walking or cycling, which is now allowed in a radius of 5km from your house during stage 4 of the lockdown.

Exercising vigorously for 75 minutes weekly, would have a similar effect. Review spoke to Mogau Moseri, a personal trainer at Virgin Active, who explained that it’s important to work out.

“One of the benefits of physically being active is that you not only activate your body muscles, it also helps change one’s level of chemicals in the brain, such as endorphins and stress hormones. This could help lift your mood in these stressful times,” he explained.

He added that the duration of the lockdown can be used as the perfect opportunity to get started on that body you have always dreamt of. In order to stay on track, it’s important to remain disciplined and once you manage to stick to your exercise routine that is in line with your goal, you start to see results; whether it’s the energy levels going up, feeling less stressed or even physical changes.

“This tends to make people more disciplined and motivated to keep going,” he added.

Mogau noted the importance of getting your technique right to avoid injuries when exercising. When you lose form in an exercise, it serves less to no purpose of what it is intended to do.

Days such as World Move Day are important as they highlight the importance of health and to make people aware that it’s not just about going to the gym, lifting heavy weights or spending two hours on cardio programmes.

“A total of 150 minutes of moderate-to-intense aerobics workout per week could improve your health, reduce blood cholesterol, lower the risks of diabetes and improve bone strength and joints,” he said.
