How locals plan to spoil Mom this Sunday

Many residents are fortunate to be with their moms this Mother’s Day and despite the lockdown, they plan to spoil their mothers to bits.

POLOKWANE – She is the one person who can master many titles: that of your best friend, doctor, nurse, therapist, daughter, wife, but most importantly, that of mother.

Across the world, people will celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday.

Review asked local residents to share their creative ideas on how they plan to spend the day amid the nationwide lockdown.

Regardless of the lockdown, mothers still deserve to loved and spoiled for the roles they generously and tirelessly play in our lives. Mothers should not only be loved and taken care of on Mother’s Day, but every day. I am not a great cook, so normally I would take my mom out to a restaurant, but with the lockdown I will have to up my game with my kitchen skills, and make her a nice breakfast in bed and for dessert, a slice of cake I baked myself, with cherries on top. After that, I will spoil her with a foot spa treatment, which includes a foot massage.

I made my mom a nice hand-beaded headscarf for Mother’s Day. It is easy to make, so anyone who would like to make their mom something special can make it:

• Use 1m of velvet fabric in any colour of your choice.

• Cut it into a triangle shape.

• Close hand-stitch the open hems.

• Use white chalk to draw patterns on the fabric or a fabric maker (you can make any pattern).

• Use beads of any colour to decorate the fabric and the patterns you drew.

• Make sure your ends are tightly secure to avoid beads falling off.

Your mom can wear it with her traditional attire or any outfit that she feels will go best with it.

The Covid-19 pandemic must not be an excuse for you not to spoil your mother this Mother’s Day. Mothers are our queens and we need to treat them on their special day, no matter what. Without her knowing, I took my mom’s measurements and made her a nice khiba dress, which I know she will love. I am no tailor, but I followed instructions carefully on how to make such a dress. I hope she likes it. I love my mom so much, and I thank God for blessing me with a wonderful mother.

I used my creative skills to make my mom a portrait for Mother’s Day. I started by making a drawing of her on an A4 piece of paper. My mother is a strong, independent African woman, and therefore I used colours that represented exactly that. I used acrylic paints, in the colours yellow, red, burnt sienna, black and white. But a touch of orange was missing, so I mixed red and yellow to get orange. To create a natural colour on her cheeks I mixed red and burnt sienna and to create the perfect background for the portrait, I mixed white and red.

I love spending time in the kitchen, trying out new recipes that I see on YouTube. So on Mother’s Day, I plan on surprising my mom with a homemade pizza with all her favourite toppings.

I am a tailor and love to make beautiful creations. This Mother’s Day I am making my mom an African printed doek with a matching skirt and face mask, which she can use to keep safe now during the national lockdown.
