Walk in pink to help fight breast cancer

On Saturday morning, residents gathered at the Pietersburg Cricket Club to take part in the Pick n Pay Women's Walk.

On Saturday morning, residents gathered at the Pietersburg Cricket Club to take part in the Pick n Pay Women’s Walk.

This walk is in aid of PinkDrive, a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) powering South Africa’s first mobile mammography unit and PinkDrive Educational Unit.

During each Pick n Pay Women’s Walk, there is a mobile clinic where women can get a free mammogram.

According to Candice Cornelissen, marketing manager of PinkDrive, the aim of the Pick n Pay Women’s Walk is to engage the community and educate all residents on breast cancer.

“We want to teach them how important early detection is. All the money we raise by hosting the Women’s Walk goes to PinkDrive.”

Celeste Jordt, public relations officer at Pick n Pay, said many more people attended the walk than expected.

“We would like to thank every person who participated in this event as well as all our sponsors.

“Without the community, this walk would not have been such a big success.”

The sponsors included Pick n Pay, Momentum and Futurelife. Each walker received a goodie bag and a medal at the finish line.

“This was very nice, but I am very tired now,” said Ruth Mametja after finishing the 5km walk.
