Polokwane ward councillor arrested while partying with friends

Six other people were also arrested for disregarding national lockdown regulations

POLOKWANE – A Polokwane Ward Councilor, whose name is known to Review, was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning, as he was partying with friends.

Six other people were also arrested for disregarding national lockdown regulations, which confine each person to his/her place of residence, unless for the purpose of performing an essential service or obtaining essential goods or services.

This was announced at a feedback meeting by the Provincial Command Council, led by Premier Chupu Mathabatha on Wednesday, who said council recommended that serious steps be taken against the councillor.

Matshidiso Mothapo, Spokesperson for the Polokwane Municipality told Review that they are pursuing the matter with the police to get the facts.

“Once the facts have been established and a report forwarded to the Speaker, the Speaker will follow due process in terms of legislation that regulates council matters, including the conduct of ward councillors. Now that council cannot deal with the matter due to the lockdown, the Speaker may refer the matter to the MEC of Coghsta,” he said.

As gazetted, any person who contravenes this regulation, shall be guilty of an offence and, on conviction, liable to a fine or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months or to both a fine and imprisonment.
