Virginity testing is all about pride

The Shayandima township and the surrounding communities nearly came to standstill last Monday, when about 14 virgin girls pride themselves as part of Heritage Day celebrations which was held in Christ Worship Centre.

LIMPOPO – Resident, Khodani Mudzanani said they decided to preserve the living heritage by honouring young girls who have been tested for virginity with certificates of appreciations.

Some of the virgin girls displayed U losha (sign of respecting elder people).

“We are remembering our living heritage through wearing Tshivenda traditional attire such as minwenda, singing traditional songs and dances. Our young girls who paraded in front of us was part of priding themselves that, they are real virgin girls who have never had sexual intercourse with boys.

“The girls are aged been 13 and 23 years old and are also proud of their clean bodies and have made the Shayandima and surrounding communities proud,” said Mudzanani. Apostle Ramudzuli Lehangwa who addressed the girls said one should pride oneself through identifying one’s culture and tradition.

“As Vhavenda people we must teach our children to preserve culture and tradition, and we must let them know that they are what they are because of their culture.

“We encourage other parents to send their children to this heritage and cultural event,” said Lehangwa.

According to Lehangwa, virginity testing also helps the young girls to abstain from sexual practices which result in teenage pregnancies.

He added that the virginity testing enables young girls to concentrate on their education, rather than playing with boys for sexual purposes.

One of the young girls who were tested, Sharon Mavhungu said to be tested for virginity will help her to pride herself, and remember that sex before marriage is a sin.

“One needs to be proud of being a clean girl.”
