MEC urges students to study hard
University of Limpopo's Economic Freedom Fighters students slightly interrupted MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba's speech at the campus recently.
LIMPOPO –Â Ramathuba was interrupted during the department’s ‘She Conquers’ campaign official launch.
It all began when the EFF members complained that the MEC has made empty promises and continues to fail them.
The EFF members were later brought to order which saw Ramathuba continuing with her speech.
Ramathuba urged students to stay away from blessers.
“As students, you need to focus on your studies as time wasted is never regained,” she said.
She added the students should not only focus on government for employment.
“You need to register your own companies while you are still at varsity as this can help reduce the unemployment challenge our country is faced with,” she said.
She added government recently introduced flavoured condoms and that they should be used.
“The country’s HIV/aids statistics continue to rise every month due to ignorance, especially from young girls,” she said.
She said early pregnancy can easily ruin one’s future and that should not be undermined.
Ramathuba said drugs and alcohol have ruined many lives in society, leading them to bury more young people than they do elderly people.
Alex Semba, Higher Education and Training HIV/aids Programme (HEAIDS) National Programme Manager, said the campaign is seen to be a plan for sustainability.
“We expect the campaign to move forward after this launch as this can help reduce the number of different illnesses we are registering every day,” said Semba. He said they believe that through this launch they will have a better, healthier society.
“We believe this campaign will empower, protect and advance our young women and girls,” he said.
Daniel Mongalo, University of Limpopo Student Representative Council President, said girl students continue to experience menstruation challenges every day.
“Free condoms are distributed everywhere and the MEC should also supply our sisters with sanitary towels so they can also live with dignity,” said Mongalo.
He said they need the MEC to consider thinking about the university.
“The university registers a large number of students every year and a state-of-the-art health centre should be built within the university’s premises,” he said.
