220 km walk to aid the needy students

In commemoration of Youth Month, John Leshilo organised a 220 km 10-day walk to raise awareness and raise funds to assist needy students who are physically challenged.

LIMPOPO – The 220 km 10-day walk is a remarkable feat to be completed by three students from Sekhukhune TVET, Samuel Moela, Ephraim Mashilo and John Leshilo, a blind student. The walk commenced last week Monday.

The walk started at Motetema in Sekhukhune district and will end at Hector Peterson Square in Soweto.

According to the walk organiser and co-founder of Express Movements, John Leshilo, the 220 km walk aims to generate money that will help pay the tuition fees of needy students and to buy necessities for those who are physically challenged.

“It will also serve as a way to encourage the youth to understand and appreciate the importance of education,” says Leshilo.

He says what worries him most is that physically challenged people in society are often undermined and he wants to help change this with the 10-day walk.

“With this walk we also honour the memory of the 1976 students who fought for better education under the Apartheid regime. Education is the key to success and without it I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he explained.

Leshilo further saiys although this walk is a long journey, they want to make sure they arrive at Hector Peterson Square on or before Thursday (16 June).

Ephraim Mashilo, a level four electrical engineering student, says they strongly believe that with the support of the community they will easily be able to achieve their goal.

Samuel Moela says he is excited to be a part of this journey and hopes the funds raised will be used well.

The trio reached Orlando in Soweto on Monday.
