A 35-year-old police officer from Burgersfort was killed in the line of duty in the early hours this morning

LIMPOPO – According to police spokesperson, Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba, Pule Edward Kekana, along with detectives from Sekhukhune, were tracing a suspect in a business robbery case.

“It is alleged the officer was shot during a shoot-out with the suspect at his shack in Mogashoa village. He was fatally shot in the throat,” said Ledwaba.

A bullet missed another officer in the leg, while the suspect was shot in the chest, he added.

The suspect was transported to hospital, where he is under police guard. He faces charges of murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Acting provincial police commissioner, Maj Genl Nonhlanhla Zulu, has condemned the incident, and said that the police will leave no stone unturned in combating and investigating criminals.

“We send our condolences to the bereaved family,” said Zulu.
