Mpho’s got the morning spirit spunk

With the correct combination of beauty, brains and spunk, radio personality, Mpho Maumela is a force to be reckoned with

POLOKWANE – The 29-year-old is a radio presenter on Energy FM, where she co-hosts the Ashifa Breakfast Show every weekday from 06:00 until 09:00.

Maumela grew up in Vermont, and her love for radio grew when she was a student at the University of Venda. According to her, she has always dreamed of being on radio.

“I’ve always loved radio and I am an avid listener. I had a friend in radio who would ask me to listen to their show, offer critique and brainstorm on ideas. That’s when the radio bug bit me. I started to get first-hand experience of the radio industry and saw it from a new perspective, that is when I fell in love with being a part of it,” she explains.

She admits that the industry is male-dominated but she is not letting that discourage her. “The only way to make headway in any male-dominated industry is to stay true to yourself, work hard, and stay on top of your game,” Maumela continues.

She describes herself as a family-orientated young woman. She explains her family inspires her and keeps her going with everything she does. Aside from her relatives, she says she is inspired by ordinary people who break boundaries.

“I’m inspired by hard workers who are constantly seeking to better themselves and remain humble and grounded no matter the heights they reach.”

Maumela shares some of her most memorable moments with Review Bonus.

“My very first day on air, the breakfast show was the first show to go live. That will always be one of the best moments in my life. I also love being a part of the Energy FM community outreach programmes, it’s hard to narrow it down to a few examples, but one of the best things about being with Energy FM is that you get the opportunity to have a positive impact in people’s lives. I love having that sense of purpose,” she says.

As someone who is making a success of herself, Maumela took the time out to give advice to young women who want to follow in her footsteps. “The only thing you should know for sure is that you don’t know everything. Knowledge is power! Never stop learning, in whichever environment you find yourself, take every opportunity to better yourself,” she stated.

She says she is still eager to learn and take her career to the next level. ” I’ve learnt so much and continue to learn on a daily basis, there’s no room for complacency in our industry,” she concludes.
