Driving ambition on par for caddie Obed

Obed Mabotja is the friendly face golfers at the Polokwane Golf Club have come to know over the past 37 years

POLOKWANE – Being a golf caddie has turned out to be a fruitful and enjoyable career choice for Obed, who hails from Seshego Zone 1 just outside Polokwane.

“I started to work as a caddie when I was still attending school at Mohlakaneng High School in Seshego. Unfortunately, I had to leave school in Gr 10 due to my family’s financial situation. I was 18 years old when I started coming to the Polokwane Golf Club to help golfers carry their equipment as a means to an income for my family, as both my parents were unemployed. I was introduced to the idea by a friend of mine, Isaac Matjatji, who is a golfer himself. Right from the get-go I took this job very seriously and it has turned into a way of life for me rather than a job,” Obed says.

He says choosing to become a caddie has greatly improved his way of life financially. “Since I started working as a caddie, I have never needed to worry about not having enough money to care for my family. Many people would not consider becoming a caddie, but I am forever thankful for being introduced to this career path.”

The father of three says being a caddie is a big responsibility, especially if there are several tournaments scheduled at the club.

“There are certain items the golfer you are assisting will need and it is your responsibility to make sure the golf bag is properly stocked, ensure the golf clubs are in top condition, and most importantly, that there are enough golf balls,” he explains.

He says God has blessed him with a steady income and a wonderful opportunity. “I am so pleased to say I have a lifelong love affair with golf. This game has taught me so much about myself and about life.”
