UPDATE: school set alight in Mookgophong

A section of the school was set alight by unknown suspects

LIMPOPO – Angry residents from a township in Mookgophong chased the premier, Stanley Mathabatha away on Thursday afternoon when he paid the area a visit.

Mathabatha visited the area to address the residents on the recent violent protests that erupted in the town.

According to a source, who did not wish to be named, the atmosphere was quite tense and some of the residents got violent when Mathabatha tried to address them.

The residents have also called for the resignation of the mayor Sarah Monyamane, saying she was failing to provide them with effective service delivery.

Meanwhile, a section of Mokari Secondary School in Mookgophong was set alight by unknown suspects last night.

Provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, said the damage was quite extensive, and that no suspects have been arrested yet.

“No further incidents of violent protests have been reported throughout the night. The police are still monitoring the situation,” said Otto.

The Mookgophong Municipality could not be reached for comment.
