Kat Nyoni – fashion diva keeping up with the trend

POLOKWANE – For Katlego “Kat” Nyoni, fashion has always been a part of his life, and he is unapologetic about it. Whenever you see Kat, he is always well dressed and smells good.

One could say Kat is meticulous about the way he looks in that everything has to look perfect and his ensembles are expertly put together.

Kat’s personality comes through in his looks. With a bubbly personality and a hint of fiercenes, Kat says he draws inspiration from anything artistic, and nature is mostly where his inspiration comes from.

“I can’t really say I draw inspiration from fashion magazines and lifestyle shows because the clothes depicted on those mediums are expensive.”

Kat says his style is not particularly unique, but it symbolises who he is.

My style is a fusion of both sophisticated formal attire and accessories which make me true to who I am. My fashion icon is Idols judge and choreographer, Somizi Mhlongo. There is something in the way his fashion went from just okay to amazing in a matter of fashionable seconds.

Having loved fashion from a very young age and having experimented with his mother’s clothing, Kat says the way to complete an outfit is to have attitude.

“If you are wearing the look, then you must own it,” he says.

He has a knack for turning something simple into something that looks like it came off the runways in Milan or Paris. Style, according to Kat, does not have to be rocket science and he jokingly says he is a “cheapskate” because he buys his clothes anywhere and loves a good sale just like anyone else.

“I always say fashion is simple, if you feel overdressed, you probably are.”

He goes on further to say you do not need to have money to look good. Surprisingly, Kat says he doesn’t own branded clothing and the only expensive thing he invests in is cologne because he believes in smelling good at all times.

“Like, I do not play around,” he says. His favourite colognes include the House of Versace and Dior, among others.

Evidently, his fashion no-no links to branded and expensive clothing. He says to him, a fashion no-no is when people wear expensive clothing that doesn’t turn heads. What is important, are accessories as he says that they complete the look because they go with all looks including a night out or playful looks.

“Whether hand, eye or neck, all girls need to own accessories otherwise the fashion police will haunt you.”

You will never find Kat without his hair done or his nails painted. He says he stresses his hairdresser out all the time and he does his own nails in different colours and themes. A good pair of jeans is what everyone should have in their closet, says Kat, but you will never see him in leopard print or a pair of crocodile skin shoes.

Kat says he is a fashion diva because he flaunts his good looks for the world to see.He says his colleagues, his boyfriend and his sister all know he refers to himself as Lady Gaga and that makes him a fashion diva.

“It takes time to put a good outfit together, so flaunt it and I am a diva about it.”
