Services resume in Vuwani following protests

Services have resumed in Vuwani after the Vuwani magistrate's court released the secretary of Pro-Makhado Demarcation Task Team, Avhapfani Mudau on R1 000 bail

LIMPOPO – Services have resumed in Vuwani after the Vuwani magistrate’s court released the secretary of Pro-Makhado Demarcation Task Team, Avhapfani Mudau on R1 000 bail on Tuesday.

Mudau was arrested last Friday for public violence and his arrest exasperated members of the task team, who expressed their anger by petrol bombing a police nyala.

According to the provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Fanie Masemola, the damage of the burned vehicle is estimated at R5 million.

“The police tried to disperse the protesters with rubber bullets, but they kept charging towards them. The police tried to escape as the mob approached the nyala and three of them sustained slight injuries. Three other state vehicles were damaged,” said Masemola.

The premier, Stanley Mathabatha visited Vuwani on Tuesday, where he asked the crowd to wait for three weeks, when the chairperson of the Municipal Demarcation Board (MBD), Jane Thupana would announce whether they fell under the newly proposed Malamulele municipality.

Mathabatha pleaded with the crowd to remove the barricades from the roads and to allow learners to go to school.

Spokesperson for Pro-Makhado Demarcation Task Team, Arnold Mulaudzi said they were happy that Mudau was released and that they would continue to fight if the MBD forced them to fall under the newly proposed municipality.

Thupana confirmed she would announce the board’s decision in three weeks’ time.

The police continue to patrol the area.
