LIMPOPO – GOSPEL singer, Thabo ‘City’ Modiba (31) from Ga-Mamaila in Mphotwane village says his second album, Emmanuel is doing well and fans could expect a music video for one of the singles later in the year.
He matriculated in 2002 and furthered his studies at the University of Limpopo, where he obtained a bachelor degree in accounting.
City started singing professionally in 1999 as a member of Revival Family Choir.
“I’ve been in the music industry for a while now. Having started singing at the age of 12, I went on to join groups like Revival Family Choir, Rock n Roll, Leswika la Tumelo, The Pinnacles, Bana Ba Thapelo and Balatedi ba Morena,” he says.
In 2011, City joined Balatedi ba Morena and they released the albums, Lona Baratanang and O se Ntebale le Nna.
“I went solo in 2012 and released my debut album, Ke Rata Wena in 2013. It is a pity the album did not do that well, as we marketed and distributed it ourselves,” says City.
He registered his record label, Moziri Music in June 2013.
“The company turned two years in June this year, and we have so far signed four artists whose albums were released and their music videos will be filmed soon.”
“I started the label after I saw that there was a lot of talent in Limpopo and I wanted to give them an opportunity to be in studio. All the artists we signed are doing well,” he says.
City says he is inspired by Oleseng, Rebecca Malope, Joyous Celebration, Benjamin Dube, Soweto Gospel Choir and Tshepo Tshola.
He has shared the stage with the likes of Winnie Mashaba, Trica Selala, Ngwana Ledwaba and Barorisi Ba Morena.
