Gold and copper worth over R24m seized in Limpopo

The SA Revenue Services (SARS) and the police seized gold bars and copper worth over R24 million near the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo.

LIMPOPO – The SA Revenue Services (SARS) and the police seized gold bars and copper worth over R24 million near the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo.

”The occupants of the Toyota Quantum microbus sped off during an inspection of the vehicle at the Beitbridge border post on Monday. SARS officials then pursued the vehicle, the occupants abandoned the vehicle at Waterpoort, Limpopo and fled the scene,” said spokesman Luther Lebelo.

Gold bars estimated to be worth R24 million and 279 kg of copper were discovered in false compartments in the vehicle.

”The recovered copper and gold is currently being processed at the SAPS Laboratories and the matter is being investigated further by the SAPS,” Lebelo said.
