100 bikers salute fallen friend using helmets

FAMILY and friends of Matimba "Powerless" Mabaso said their final goodbyes at his funeral in Bernfarm village outside Phalaborwa

PHALABORWA – FAMILY and friends of Matimba “Powerless” Mabaso said their final goodbyes at his funeral in Bernfarm village outside Phalaborwa on Saturday.

Mabaso was a member of the Eagles Bikers Club and there were 100 bikers who attended his funeral. Amongst these bikers were members of the Eagles Bikers Club as well as other bikers from other clubs in Limpopo and Gauteng.

As Mabaso’s coffin sank into the grave, some bikers revved the national bikers’ anthem with their bikes and others held their helmets up in respect and remembrance of the fallen biker.

Eric Harmse, Eagles Bikers Club coordinator, said: “It was a sad moment as we said goodbye to a good friend, but we said no tears. Instead we celebrated his life and commemorated the jolly and free spirited person he was.

“The Eagles Bikers Club and Mabaso family would like to thank every biker who attended the funeral, family and friends who came from far, paramedics who attended to Powerless at the accident scene and and Two Mountains Burial Services. The family would also like to thank everyone who contributed financially, with words of encouragement and all the support during their time of mourn.”

The 30-year-old Mabaso died in a head-on collision last Saturday afternoon.

He was travelling from Hoedspruit to Phalaborwa when his motorcycle collided head-on with a sedan on the Mica Road (R40).

According to an eyewitness, Emmanuel Sefole, who was driving in a vehicle behind Mabaso, the sedan was overtaking another vehicle on the road when it collided with Mabaso. He died at the scene of the accident. The police are still investigating a case of capable homicide and no arrest has been made yet.

Mabaso leaves behind his parents, sister, wife and child.
