Police launch manhunt for Ethiopian after shooting

POLICE in Maake, just outside Tzaneen, launched an all-out manhunt for an Ethiopian national in connection with the death of a fellow Ethiopian.

TZANEEN – POLICE in Maake, just outside Tzaneen, launched an all-out manhunt for an Ethiopian national in connection with the death of a fellow Ethiopian.

Tzaneen cluster police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said the fugitive, Thalun Tasfoye (28), was regarded as dangerous by the police and that civilians were advised not to try to apprehend him.

“For as long as this man is carrying a firearm, we regard him as very dangerous to society and people should not attempt to corner him.

“We are still waiting for his profile from his native country to check if he has committed similar offences in the past,” Ngoepe said.

He said he could not disclose the name of the victim as there was still protocol to be followed between Pretoria and Addis Ababa as per Interpol communications legislation.

The only information he could divulge was that the victim was an Ethiopian man, aged 25 years.

According to Ngoepe, the two men allegedly had an intense argument that later became a serious altercation.

The incident occurred near the Lenyenye clinic around midnight on 31 December.

According to Ngoepe, Tasfoye allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the victim several times in the chest and head after the two failed to reach consensus during the emotionally-charged argument. He said the victim died at the scene.

Ngoepe said the motive behind the argument and shooting was still unknown and police investigations continued.

Anyone with information regarding Tasfoye’s whereabouts can contact Lt Col Cecil Machimane at 072 532 1725 or 08600 10111, or alert the nearest police station.
