Mayor checks on progress in muni

POLOKWANE mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng started a municipal wide programme to visit projects to check on progress and to ensure quality of delivery.

She used this opportunity to remind contractors and consultants of the importance of timely delivery so that communities can enjoy the services as promised by government.

Accompanied by the municipality’s political management team and members of the mayoral committee, Nkadimeng visited Ga-Dikgale and Moletjie to inspect roads and water projects.

During this visit, the project managers, consultants, contractors and project community liaison officers had to be on site in order to explain and provide feedback on progress and challenges.

She said she would also visit the municipality’s satellite offices.

Nkadimeng said it was important for project managers, contractors and consultants to be reminded of government’s promises to improve people’s lives through access to quality services.

She said the municipality experienced problems with some projects because contractors accepted contracts knowing that they would not be able to deliver on their promises.

“Contractors who don’t complete contracts in time cause roll-overs that deny communities services and also impact negatively on the municipality’s spending pattern,” Nkadimeng said.

She said the municipality could not allow a situation where projects went beyond their expected completion period as this robbed communities of services. “We have to take action because we have been given a mandate to protect our people’s interests.”

At one project stop that involved the construction of a reservoir, which has gone past its completion date, Nkadimeng warned consultants that they should be aware that further delays would not be tolerated, as “the people are not drinking water as a result of the delays”. It was agreed on a month period for the contractors to ensure the reservoir is in operation.
