MEC calls for community to support their vulnerable after mother kills 2-week-old baby

This after a 21-year-old woman allegedly killed and buried her two-week-old baby boy.

LIMPOPO – “Communities must look after the vulnerable, including young and new mothers, children, older persons and persons with disabilities.”

These are the words of the MEC of Social Development, Nkakareng Rakgoale after a 21-year-old woman was arrested for the murder of her two-week-old baby boy. It is alleged she killed her baby before she buried his body in a shallow grave near Ha-mutsha Tshirangadzi village. She was arrested on Wednesday after she led the police to the spot where she had buried her baby.

Rakgoale urged young mothers to make use of psychological, medical and psychosocial support available at clinics, hospitals and social workers – especially parenting skills – should they encounter any post natal depression or experience difficulty in raising a child.

“We do not know the exact circumstances behind this incident but we need to put an end to the senseless killing of children of all ages and for whatever reason. We continue to say that we want to create caring societies together, but that requires of communities to look after their vulnerable,” she added.

The accused will appear in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 6 March on a charge of murder.
