Sarel Nong successfully summits highest mountain outside of Asia

Nong alongside a group of three climbers; Sibusiso Vilane, Gerry Elsdon (former Miss South Africa) and Dr Mabule Mothapo embarked on this eight-day expedition to raise money to buy sanitary towels for underprivileged young girls.

POLOKWANE – In the Mendoza province of Argentina, the Principal Cordillera of the Andes mountain range is found. One of the mountains in the range, Aconcagua is where Sarel Nong recently found himself on top of.  The range is the highest mountain outside of Asia and the highest in both the southern and western hemispheres with a summit elevation of just under 7 000 metres.

Nong alongside a group of three climbers; Sibusiso Vilane, Gerry Elsdon (former Miss South Africa) and Dr Mabule Mothapo embarked on this eight-day expedition to raise money to buy sanitary towels for underprivileged young girls.

This isn’t Nong’s first mountain hike. He successfully summited Kilimanjaro in 2017 as part of the #Trek4Mandela campaign and in 2018, successfully made it to the summit of Mount Everest.

Adolescence is a crucial stage in life and one that remains challenging for most girls because of its physical and psychological changes. We have noticed that when girls menstruate, they skip school due to lack of sanitary towels and use unsavoury methods when at home, which leads to infection. The main aim is to help girls understand their power as women and strive to grow their minds while promoting the importance of education, healthy living, entrepreneurship and goal setting,” he said.
