‘Fake cop’ released on bail, rearrested for theft of police firearm

The 28-year-old man allegedly portrayed himself as a police officer to evade arrest

LIMPOPO – The 28-year-old man was arrested at a roadblock along Loskop/Ntwane Road in December during operation Zizojika Izinto after he was found in possession of a police firearm and ammunition, two grenades, police issued handcuffs, reflector jacket and bulletproof vest. At the time of his arrest he allegedly pretended to be a police officer to evade arrest.

Preliminary investigations then revealed that the firearm was reported stolen at Dullstroom Police Station, Mpumalanga in June 2019.

He faces charges of impersonating a police officer, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition and on Thursday appeared before the Moutse Magistrate’s Court and wasĀ  released on bail of R4 000. His case was postponed to 23 February for further police investigation. While still in court, he was then rearrested by the police from Mpumalanga for the theft of a police firearm, Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo explained.

Investigations into how he acquired police equipment and uniform still continue.
