Legion Wargaming is calling all gaming fanatics across Limpopo

Wargaming is more than 100 years old and brings people together with an interest in futuristic sci-fi.

POLOKWANE – Polokwane has its own club and they want to create awareness that people with the same interest can become part of this exciting club.

They place emphasis on the fact that the club is open to anybody who is interested, irrespective of race, age or gender.

The club started with six members but two have since moved away leaving them with only four members, which is unfortunate when you see other provinces having hundreds of members.

“We want to create awareness for the club because we are estimating that there should be around 30 people in Polokwane that might be interested in this hobby but they don’t know that the club exists,” said Shaun Page, one of the founding members of the Polokwane club.

Thinus du Toit, who joined the club a year ago explained that he has always been a gamer but he was into computer games until he was introduced to the club and he has not looked back since.

“I like the human interaction that goes with the gaming unlike being behind a computer screen playing for hours on end, without the actual physical interaction with the people you are playing with. Even our wives can interact with each other while we play games.

“It’s interactive and you interact with real people,” he said.

Shaun added that part of the hobby is the collecting, assembling and painting and the other part is the actual playing.

Some people only build and collect, whereas others buy a second-hand army that is already painted just to play the game as they are not interested in the building aspect of the game.

He explained that on Friday evenings they play smaller games that don’t take up too many hours.

On Saturdays they meet for longer which allows them to play Warhammer, a game that takes about two hours and Sundays are reserved for the building and assembling of the models and getting to know each other.

Despite looking like an expensive hobby to maintain, they explained that it is really not and one just needs between R30 to R300 a month to keep going.

“It’s about R400 for a starter box that comes with two armies and a rule book and a dice,” said Thinus but he explained that it’s an investment because this is a once-off purchase and any additional spending will be to increase your army.

Shaun added that newcomers need not worry about spending as they are there to assist.

“We help newcomers to get into the hobby and they don’t need to spend anything to get started, we have enough for them to get them into the game and they can collect their own, slowly so they can see what they like and know what they want to collect,” he explained.

They also hope to create enough volume to be able to take part in a tournament in Johannesburg in April and play against the rest of the country as a club.
