Murder of SASSA employee and daughter leaves MEC shocked

The MEC for Social Development, Nkakareng Rakgoale has expressed her shock following the double murder of a 39-year-old woman and her 17-year-old daughter in Bela-Bela on Tuesday, 10 December.

LIMPOPO – Thandi Mathebula and her daughter, Sharon, were killed in a domestic violence related incident at extension 8. It has since emerged that Thandi was an employee at The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) in Bela-Bela.

The MEC said that social workers are deployed across the province and urged those who are experiencing difficulties in their relationships to seek professional help before taking matters into their own hands.

“Incidents of gender-based violence have now reached a boiling point and in the space of two week, at least 12 women and children have died at the hands of their abusers. What worries me most is that the incidents happen despite the department’s intensification of awareness campaigns which are being conducted throughout the province.”

She adds that violence against woman and children is tearing communities apart. She together with the Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu will visit the Mathebule family this afternoon.

The murder accused, who is the husband of Thandi and step-father of Sharon, died in a head-on collision on the R516 Rooiberg/Bela-Bela road later the same day in an apparent suicide. Two counts of murder as well as a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the police.
