6 trial-awaiting prisoners escape custody outside Mokopane

The men are wanted for crimes ranging from burglary to rape.

MOKOPANE-  A team has since been assembled to investigate the recent spate of escapes which have taken place at various police stations in the province. This comes after six men escaped from police holding cells at Tinmyne Police Station outside Mokopane over the weekend.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motafela Mojapelo says the six trail-awaiting prisoners escaped from the cells during routine activities on Saturday at around 12:00.

The escapees face charges ranging from burglary, theft to rape and are identified as follow:

Christopher Langa (22) faces a charge of burglary residential committed around Tinmyne.
Victor Dube (31) faces a charge of pointing of a firearm, assault GBH committed around Tinmyne and Contravention of Illegal Immigration Act.
Tshurai Fabiano (22) faces a charge of theft general committed around Naboomspruit.
Tawanda Goandepi (21) faces a charge of rape committed around Tinmyne.
Simbarashe Ngwenzi (27) faces a charge of Contravention of Illegal Immigration Act.
Mahlatsi Lucky Setumula (21) faces two counts of rape committed around Tinmyne.

On Sunday, 3 November four trail-awaiting trial prisoners escaped from the Hoedspruit police holding cells and the search for them continues.

The team of investigators will be led by the Deputy Provincial Police Commissioner responsible for crime detection, Maj Genl Samuel Manala and will focus on the circumstances that led to all the recent escapes in the province. The team will zoom into whether or not appropriate internal corrective measures were taken and the effectiveness thereof, explained Mojapelo.

Necessary steps will be taken against any member of the police whose conduct was found to have contributed to these escapes.

The police appeal to anyone who can assist the police with information which can lead to the rearrest of the above mentioned Tinmyne escapees to contact Det WO Rasimati Ngobeni at 063 103 3301.
