Repair of potholes to ease traffic flow and prevent unnecessary loss of lives due to accidents

The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Monicca Mochadi launched Operation Thiba Potholes at the D2537 route in Burgersfort last Thursday.

LIMPOPO – Many road accidents in the province, a number of which results in the loss of lives, happen because of potholes.

The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Monicca Mochadi against this backdrop launched Operation Thiba Potholes at the D2537 route in Burgersfort last Thursday.

The operation will see the MEC conducting oversight visits to road infrastructure projects which are currently under construction across the province.

Mochadi told CV that embarking on the exercise serves to ensure that what her department pronounced during the 2019/2020 budget vote is happening on the ground.

“This is also in preparation for the festive season which requires our roads to be completed, of good quality and in good condition,” said Mochadi.

She said this would help to ease traffic flow and prevent unnecessary loss of lives due to accidents.

“Roads such as the under construction D2537 which connects Penge and Burgersfort town is one of our economic viable routes which also needed attention,” she said.

She said her department has declared a war against potholes.

“Every road with potholes across the province will be attended to,” she said.

She said it is their wish for all potholes to be repaired, but that the department was facing serious budgetary constraints.

“We however, care about our people’s lives and we believe through this operation, many lives can be saved,” she said.

Mochadi said her department together with Limpopo Road Agency (RAL) are constructing high level roads across the province.

“This is to showcase that we have the capacity and engineers that can do the work in a professional way,” said Mochadi.

She said high level roads such as the D4190, which connects Mabulela and Apel and the D4168, connecting Senwabarwana and Indermark, are almost complete.

“We are proud as a department that both roads will officially be opened for our roads users soon,” she said.

She also guaranteed the quality of all roads which are currently under construction.

“Our department is working hard to ensure that all the worn roads are being reconstructed, however this too is budget-dependent,” she said.
