Woman dies following crocodile attack in the Lepelle River

Police say the woman was taken to Matlala Hospital but later passed on.

LIMPOPO – Police in Rakgoadi, outside Marble Hall, have opened an inquest docket after a woman was recently attacked and killed by a crocodile while crossing the Lepelle River.

Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says a group of people were walking to Tsantsabela village to attend a church service when Mavis Mohlala (39) from Jane Furse was grabbed by a crocodile.

“Others in the group fought the crocodile until it let go but the victim had already sustained serious injuries. Emergency services were called and she was taken to Matlala Hospital but later passed on,” his statement read.

Mohlala’s death follows that of a 63-year-old woman who was attacked and killed by a hippo in Malamulele in last week. The attack happened on Wednesday night, 9 October when residents in Magona/Gidjana spotted the hippo and its offspring and tailed the animal fueled by curiosity.
