UPDATE: Prison escapees apprehended outside Polokwane

Two of 12 trial-awaiting prisoners who escaped from the Seshego Police Station outside Polokwane earlier this month, were arrested last night in the Mankweng, Polokwane and Seshego Policing areas, respectively.

POLOKWANE – The 12 men, who were arrested for businesses robbery and Contravention of the Illegal Immigration Act, escaped from the police holding cells during a routine cell visit at around 21:30 on 6 September.

In a statement, Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says initial investigations revealed that 13 awaiting trial prisoners escaped during the incident, but later it was found that one of the 13 did not escape and was in another cell at the time.

Tenashe Moyo (24)  was re-arrested at Madiba Park in the Seshego Policing area and Usher Hamandanisa (27),  was rearrested at Mankweng.

During the sting operation the police arrested another 24-year-old man, who is not one of the prison escapees, after he too was found in possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen items.

Two firearms, one of which was the police issued pistol which was stolen during the escape, five magazines, 27 rounds of ammunition, 14 cellphones and groceries where recovered during the arrests.

A manhunt continues for the remaining ten escapees.

Moyo and Hamandanisa will appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s  Court on additional charges of escaping from lawful custody, robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession suspected stolen property. The third suspect faces charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession suspected stolen properties.
