Man (28) arrested after breakthrough in taxi-related killings in Limpopo

Police made a breakthrough with the arrest of a 28-year-old man, who was involved in two separate incidents of taxi related murders in 2018, said Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe in a statement on Thursday.

LIMPOPO – Two men, William Nethononda (49) and Tshishonga Nthambeleni (65), were gunned down by unknown assailants in separate incidents at Thohoyandou Block F and Maniini village respectively.

Nethononda, said to have been a member of the Long Distance Taxi Association operating from Johannesburg to Venda and vice versa, was shot and killed in front of his house in Thohoyandou Block F on 11 July 2018. It is alleged he arrived home at around 08:30 when an unknown number of suspects opened fire in his direction. He sustained several gunshots wounds and died at the scene.

On 9 August 2018 Nthambeleni, a taxi owner who was also a member of the Long Distance Taxi Association, was shot and killed at a local car wash in Maniini Village outside Thohoyandou.

A task team was immediately established and the accused was arrested in the Gauteng. He has been positively linked to the two Thohoyandou murders and two more murder incidents, which were committed in the Jepe and Roodepoort policing areas in Gauteng, Ngoepe added.

The accused is expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on two counts of murder. A manhunt for the remaining suspects is still underway, and the police urge anyone with information that can lead to their apprehension, to contact Captain Richard Boshomane at 079 894 5501. the crime stop number at 0860010111 or the nearest police station.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Maj Genl Jan Scheepers has applauded the hard work and dedication by the team of detectives, which resulted in his arrest. “We hope that this arrest brings some relief to the families of the deceased.”
