LIMPOPO – A sergeant and a constable, attached to the crime prevention unit at the Morebeng Police Station, were on Tuesday, 10 September arrested for allegedly defrauding a local informal betting ring.

In a statement, Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matima Maluleke says it is alleged the duo arrested the complainant on various occasions for reportedly operating (mo-china), and issued spot fines payable to them as admission of guilt. On each occasion they would issue a receipt.

The complainant contacted the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Crime Investigation team after he suspected that the money could be ending up in the officers’ pockets instead of being registered at the station.

Investigations revealed the amounts that were recorded in the admission of guilt register between June and August 2019 did not correspond with the ones on the complainant’s receipts, and the officers were arrested at their workplace, Maluleke added.

The duo, both 37-years-old,  are expected to appear in the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court today, on a charge of fraud.
