Help keep tourism alive, says MEC

The MEC for Tourism, Thabo Mokone has urged tourism stakeholders to keep domestic tourism active.

LIMPOPO – Mokone made this statement during the provincial Tourism Month media launch, held at Leeuwenhof Country Lodge and Garden Spa in Modimolle last Thursday.

Mokone told CV that provincial government will be using tourism as a way of job creation, creating a better future for all.

“We have a critical role to play in creating safe communities and reporting all criminal elements as they have the power to deny our people developmental opportunities,” said Mokone.

He said the department has a mandate to create a conducive environment for investments, support sustainable businesses and most importantly, stimulate their economy for job creation.

“Tourism plays an important part in contributing to economic growth as well as directly benefiting local residents and businesses. We encourage communities to vigorously market various entertainment facilities, shows, events and outdoor adventure packages.”

“This is because such activities have the potential to greatly boost tourism within any area,” he said. Mokone said government strive to constantly unlock a constant flow of tourists to the province.

“As business owners we need to break away from price-fixing collusion as such tactics are counter-revolutionary to tourist attraction,” said Mokone.

He said the department encourages communities to stand guard against all those with ill intentions towards their endangered and protected species.

“We all have a part to play in preserving our environment and wildlife for the benefit of future generations to come as well as for promotion of tourism within our province,” he said.

Limpopo Tourism Agency CEO, Sonto Ndlovu urged Limpopo citizens to travel their province as a way of growing tourism and boosting the provincial economy, “by doing so we would be selling our province which will benefit us”.

She said it should be everyone’s responsibility to create awareness about the importance of tourism in the communities.
