Tshegofatso left the engineering field to follow his calling

Tshegofatso Chueu says he always knew that he was cut out for theology, but he did not pursue it immediately after he matriculated.

POLOKWANE – Tshegofatso Godwill Chueu is a civil engineering student who decided to follow his calling and studied BA theology at Helderburg College’s Somerset West campus in the Western Cape.

Tshegofatso said it took him some time to realise that theology is what he was destined to do. “Growing up, people would tell me that based on my character and personality this would be perfect for me, it just was not easy admitting it at first and taking the plunge.”

In the end, it was curiosity that got him to enrol in the theology course, he told BONUS. “After I completed my NQF levels in civil engineering I wanted more. I felt empty; I even had dreams about theology.” He said it was only after he completed his theology studies and he started working as a social worker that he felt at peace. “Helping people from all walks of life is a fulfilling feeling. That is what gets me up in the morning.”

Tshegofatso is one of three children and he grew up in Seshego. He says he is grateful to his family for being understanding when he told them he wanted to switch careers. He intends to further his studies in the hope of touching more lives.

“I am also involved in a lot of church initiatives, in the form of outreach programmes.” Tshegofatso is a proud member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, who is also his employer under the banner of the Trans Orange Conference, where he currently serves as a social worker in the Vhembe district. The church hosts outreach programmes based on the need in the community.

“Some of these programmes happen yearly, but whenever there is a need, we find a solution.” Young people should work to make a difference, he said.

“If you work hard and have everything you desire, you will never brag about having a specific thing.” One other thing to remember, is to never rob yourself of your own existence, is his advice.
