POLOKWANE – Laerskool Pietersburg’s less fortunate learners, the Ystertjies, will be eating healthy meals thanks to a generous donation by the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moth).
The Moth’s recently delivered bags of fresh vegetables to the school to be used for preparing meals for the learners.
Moth, as it is more popularly known, is an ex-serviceman’s organisation founded in Durban in May 1927 by Charles Alfred Evenden.
Evenden was born in October 1894 and immigrated to Australia where he served with the Australian forces during World War 1. Here, he was wounded and evacuated to England. He later settled in South Africa where he worked as a cartoonist under the name “EVO” by which he was better known.
He founded the organisation, whose membership grew into thousands. Men and women streamed into its ranks and they keep memories of comradeship and self-sacrifice through shell holes as their meeting premises. M.O.T.H. shell holes have also opened in Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
In Polokwane, the Botha Shell Hole was created and is also referred to as the Garden of Remembrance. Members meet annually in the garden to remember fallen heroes as well as the dream of Charles Alfred Evenden alive. They also lend a hand to those in the community in need.’
“It means a lot to be able to help people in need and make a positive difference in the community,” André van Aswegen said.
