[WATCH] Hundreds show support as Mogalakwena mayor appears in court for assault

The Women’s League has in the meantime applied for permission for a march, saying the aim is to protect businesses, schools and government institutions, including the municipality.

MOKOPANE – Several members of the Mogalakwena sub-region turned out in support of the Mayor, Andrina Matsemela, who appeared in the local court on a charge of assault on Tuesday morning.

They filled the streets, singing and chanting that they would protect Matsemela.

The mayor addressed ANC members about the planned shutdown for Wednesday.

“I am not in hiding. I am here and I will be present at the protest tomorrow,” she said, addressing protestors near the mall.

The Women’s League has in the meantime applied for permission for a march, saying the aim is to protect businesses, schools and government institutions, including the municipality.

In the application, they request that the Station Commander of Mokopane, Col Isaac Mantjane and Warrant Officer Kekana must be removed on the basis of poor conduct against the leadership of the ANC.

The case against Matsemela was postponed to a later date.

With regard to the planned shutdown tomorrow, protestors will gather at 07:30 in front of Cashbuild in Dudu Madisha Drive. Several schools have indicated they will close for the day in view of possible disruptions.
